James R. Maher is a Real Estate Operating Partner to Sopris Capital, and Managing Director of Sopris Real Estate, where he oversees the real estate investment platform in partnership with Andy Paul.

Prior to joining Sopris Real Estate, Mr. Maher was a Principal at Admiral Capital Group, where he was head of acquisitions for the Firm’s value-add real estate investment platform. Previously, Mr. Maher worked at BlackRock for 13 years and left the firm in 2014 as a Director on the Real Estate Equity team in New York City. His responsibilities while at BlackRock included sourcing, underwriting, structuring joint venture partnerships, performing due diligence, and closing real estate acquisitions and dispositions on behalf of all BlackRock separate accounts, open-end funds, and closed-end funds, with a geographic focus on the northeast. 

Mr. Maher received his B.A. from Brown University and an MS in Real Estate Finance from New York University. 

He currently serves on the Board of South Bronx Classical Charter Schools and, in partnership with the Schools’ Founder, oversees all real estate decisions for the schools. Mr. Maher also serves as a member of the Prep for Prep Associates Council. Prep for Prep is a leadership development program that prepares promising students of color for success at independent schools throughout the Northeast. 

Mr. Maher resides in Brooklyn, NY with his wife, Annie, daughter, Madeline, and dog, Hermann.
